7 New Shows We Can’t Wait to Stream in August
There are plenty of series to fall in love with this month.
It’s an exciting month of television this August. Not only will there be long-awaited premieres of buzzy shows including The Bear – starring Jeremy Allen White – and comedy Bad Sisters from Sharon Horgan of Catastrophe fame, but we are finally getting the release of the highly anticipated House of the Dragon prequel to Game of Thrones.
You know, just casually the biggest television series ever made making a return to our screens, with a whole bunch of new Targaryens leading the charge and a cast that includes Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, and Australian actors Milly Alcock and Ryan Corr.
Game of Thrones fans are already very excited for House of the Dragon, but if Kings Landing and the Iron Throne aren’t necessarily your favourite thing, don’t worry. There’s plenty of other television to fall in love with this month. Here’s what we’ll be watching...
1. Industry
Where can I watch it? HBO
If you loved the first season of Industry, which was a high-stakes, high-octane drama set in an investment bank in London – and the group of new graduates trying to make their way in this cutthroat industry – then you’ll almost certainly be along for the ride in season two, which doubles down on the premise and takes you on another wild ride.
2. Reservation Dogs
Where can I watch it? Hulu
Another second season of a cult favourite show, this time a comedy: Taika Waititi’s Reservation Dogs. The famous director is behind this smart series, which follows four Native American teenagers on a quest to make the long journey from their hometown to Los Angeles. There are a lot of jokes and a lot of hijinx, but Reservation Dogs is also full of heart, too.
3. The Sandman
Where can I watch it? Netflix
Netflix is adding to its genre offering with this adaptation of a beloved comic series from creator Neil Gaiman. Tom Sturridge – yes, the former Mr Sienna Miller and now boyfriend to Alexa Chung – stars as the leader of a group of mystical beings on a quest to restore order to their chaotic world. This show is high concept and genre-bending, with a great cast – Game of Thrones's Gwendoline Christie stars as the devil – and a big budget.
4. A League Of Their Own
Where can I watch it? Prime Video
There’s no crying in baseball! Such was the adage uttered by Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own, the much-loved film from late director Penny Marshall and co-starring Geena Davis and Madonna. This series is a sort of adaptation of that movie, with a new cast of characters but set in the same era – the ‘40s – and telling the story of a group of female baseball stars and their male coach. Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson has both written the new show and is starring in it, alongside D’arcy Carden and Nick Offerman. We’re excited for this one.
5. Bad Sisters
Where can I watch it? From August 19 on AppleTV+
Did you love Catastrophe and This Way Up? Then we bet you’re a fan of Sharon Horgan, the Irish actor, comedian and writer who starred in both of those series and was the creative force behind Catastrophe. She will now be making television for AppleTV+, starting with Bad Sisters, a dark comedy about a group of sisters bonding over a tragic event who also happen to get caught up in a story bigger than their own, which promises to be a huge hit when it is released. Horgan stars alongside Eve Hewson, who you might remember from the addictive Netflix thriller Behind Her Eyes and Brendan Gleeson.
6. House of the Dragon
Where can I watch it? HBO
Game of Thrones returns this month with House of the Dragon, a prequel set 200 years before the original show and telling the tales of a civil war spearheaded by a bloody Targaryen line of succession. If it all feels like familiar territory that’s because it kind of is: House of the Dragon will follow the Targaryen family with characters who will most likely remind you of Daenerys and her brother Viserys, while introducing you to new houses in the world of Westeros, including the Hightowers, played by Rhys Ifans and Olivia Cooke, who are the power players of this old world. (Think of them as the Lannisters crossed with the Tyrells.) There’s a lot here for fans to fall in love with, and plenty more still for newcomers to Game of Thrones getting their first taste of this series. We couldn’t be more excited.
7. Andor
Where can I watch it? From August 31 on Disney+
Star Wars fans are very excited about Andor, a new prequel starring Diego Luna of Rogue One fame following his character Cassian Andor as he begins his rebellion journey. For two seasons, Andor will follow the antics of the Rebels as they fight the Empire, leading up to the events of Rogue One and, after that, A New Hope. If you’ve been missing Star Wars since the end of Obi-Wan, Andor might be exactly the show you need.
