What to Eat For Dinner, According to Your Star Sign

We’ve all had those nights when we’ve stood in front of the open fridge or pantry, wondering what to cook. Sometimes, usually at the end of the week, you simply run out of ideas. The (mental) cupboard is bare, and you’re left reaching for your phone and the Bopple app before you know it.

We’re here to help. You can pick up a few ideas for what to cook for dinner according to your star sign and the characteristics of your zodiac. Maybe these suggestions will spark some menu inspiration in you. Maybe they’ll lead you down the rabbit hole of a new chef to follow on Instagram or a new technique to try. At the very least, we hope they’ll help you solve one of life’s biggest quandaries: What’s for dinner?

Cancer (22 June to 22 July)

A highly intuitive and emotional water sign, those born within the markers of the Cancer zodiac are all about creature comforts. No wonder, then, that cooking is one of a Cancer’s love languages, and making slow, familiar meals brings them endless amounts of joy. Try cooking something warm and comforting, then, like an eggplant and ricotta faux lasagne – layers of vegetable and passata sauce with ricotta and cheese and topped with breadcrumbs, best eaten from a bowl on the sofa. Or, if you’re feeling more ambitious, a slow-roasted leg of lamb, left to tenderise in the oven over the course of an afternoon.

Leo (23 July to 22 August)

When a Leo cooks, they’re really cooking. Leos don’t do anything half-arsedly or without devoting themselves to the tasks, which means that if you’re lucky enough to attend a dinner party hosted by a Leo, you better prepare yourself for a four-course meal, complete with hors d'oeuvres and matching wines. Even cooking for just themselves or their family, a Leo never skimps on the ceremony. Try something with different elements, even if it’s not a degustation meal, such as a build-your-own taco night. Prepare a bunch of different sauces and salsas, along with some guacamole and chopped up vegetables, to be served alongside some chipotle smoked chicken, grilled fish or pulled pork.

Virgo (23 August to 23 September)

Practical and considered, Virgos are ideal home chefs courtesy of their love of a recipe. What more could a Virgo want, really, than a set of instructions that can be diligently followed in order to reach a delicious conclusion? Virgos also love a kitchen gadget and are more likely to have one in their home, which is why a classic Virgo dinner is the humble zoodle. Virgos, whip out your spiralisers and get zoodling, making enough zucchini noodles to use as a base for some plump pork and fennel meatballs in a jammy tomato sauce. Virgos are all about balance, and this dish is the perfect embodiment of that.

Libra (24 September to 23 October)

Smart, savvy and disciplined, Libras are traditionally great party hosts, welcoming everyone to a perfectly dressed table and a delicious dinner. We know that Libras can tackle the big dinner parties, but what about a quiet evening at home? What would they cook then? In reality, a Libra approaches a weeknight dinner the same as they would a big, fancy party. They light the candles and lay the table. They get out the good crockery and plate everything up perfectly. Whatever they cook, they make sure that there’s plenty of elements on the table, so if they’re serving a fragrant ginger poached fish, for example, they’ll accompany it with lots of steamed vegetables, some brown rice and broth. For dessert, there’ll be light and airy yoghurt cake. That’s just the Libra way.

Scorpio (24 October to 22 November)

Unsurprisingly, the passionate and outspoken Scorpios are fans of flavour. Dishes that pack a punch are going to be a hit with this water sign, whether it’s courtesy of lashings of spice, high-quality ingredients and delicious garnishes to top it all off. Remember, spice doesn’t necessarily have to mean heat. A classic Scorpio dish is a slow-cooked Moroccan tagine, rich with turmeric, paprika, saffron and ginger. Brown some chicken thighs and cook it in a heavy skillet with onions, spices and preserved lemon. Once it’s cooked, you can top it with olives and some couscous for a surprisingly simple, yet showstopping dinner.

Sagittarius (23 November to 21 December)

Sagittarius signs are adventurous eaters, always keen to try a new ingredient, method, recipe or cuisine. As such, they’re dedicated home cooks who thrive on mixing it up in the kitchen – nothing frustrates a Sagittarius more than sticking to the same old tried-and-tested weeknight dinners. It’s likely that the Sagittarius signs in your life have been spending the past few months picking up new skills, like pickling, and this is where they can showcase the fruits of their labour. They can try a spicy kimchi stew (or kimchi jjigae), which blends the red hot fermented vegetables with tofu, spring onions and pork. Once the fat from the pork melts into the stew, you know it’s time to dig in.

Capricorn (22 December to 20 January)

It’s unlikely that the Capricorns you know have any problem with meal planning. Goal-oriented and detail-focussed, Capricorns love to make a schedule and stick to it. Still, if any Capricorns are looking for inspiration, they should look for dinner recipes that are practical yet pack a big punch. Like a traybake: throwing together big, juicy sausages with lentils or chickpeas and chunks of spiced vegetables. The result is impressive but with a reasonable and understandable amount of effort. Plus, given the ease and quickness of preparation, Capricorns can make sure that dinner is on the table exactly when they want it.

Aquarius (21 January to 19 February)

Rebellious and playful, Aquarius signs are fans of all things tart and bitter. In particular, they love lemon and lime flavours, using them as often as they can in new and exciting ways in the kitchen. If any Aquarius is stuck for a dinner idea, why not try a simple but flavourful spaghetti al limone? This classic Italian dish uses cream, lemon zest and black pepper, with a bit of pecorino or parmesan to finish, to make a deceptively simple and zesty pasta sauce. Try this, and you’ll be sure to add it to your weekly dinner rotations.

Pisces (20 February to 20 March)

Unsurprisingly, this water sign adores seafood, the simpler the better. With that in mind, Pisces looking to cook fish or crustaceans at home should opt for classic flavour combinations and easy, comforting dishes. Something like a homemade prawn pizza, flavoured with fresh tomatoes, chilli and garlic, will do the trick. Make the base yourself from a simple pizza dough recipe and opt for the highest quality prawns you can afford for a delicious dinner.

Aries (21 March to 20 April)

You can spot an Aries immediately when you sit down to eat with them. Aries signs love food and dining out, and are never happier than when they can satisfy their hearty appetite with a homemade meal. One way to keep an Aries happy is to feed them something fast, but filling: Beef burgers will always be a winner, especially when topped with caramelised onions, cheese and lashings of tomato relish.

Taurus (21 April to 21 May)

Food is pleasure for this earth sign, the richer and more sinful the better. A Taurus loves to take their time with cooking, too, so a perfect dish for them is a risotto. You can pimp it up with some mushrooms if you want, but really a great risotto is just rice, onion, a splash of wine (dessert wine, if you have it), stock and thyme. Let the rice absorb the flavour of the herbs and the stock and then, when the whole thing is al dente, turn off the heat and mix in a whole lot of grated cheese. Simply grate up what you have lying around, any cheese will do. The result is an oozy, melty bowl that will fill you up.

Gemini (22 May to 21 June)

Geminis are natural grazers, which means that dinner times can be difficult. They love snack boards and cheese plates, not elaborate dishes that take aeons to cook. Counteract that Gemini impatience with a meal that is designed to be personalised, like a bowl of chilli con carne, rich with black beans and other legumes and vegetables and brown rice. The busy Gemini can fill their plate as they choose, adding toppings (cheese, avocado, salsa) to appease their own palate, and even coming back for seconds if they want. Trust us, they definitely will.
