5 Creatives on the Bedroom Feature They Can’t Live Without

From vintage treasures to statement beds, five tastemakers reveal the design details worth stealing for your bedroom.

The bedroom says so much about the person who lives in it. It’s where we rest, dream, and begin each new day – a space that reflects our taste at its most intimate and personal. Being welcomed into this sanctuary of someone’s home is always a privilege. The way the bed is styled, the treasures on the nightstand, the art chosen for the walls – each detail is deliberate, meant to be lived with and loved every day.

So, when we visited the beautiful bedrooms of some of our favorite creatives in New York City, London, and Byron Bay, we asked them to share the one feature they cherish most.

Mélanie Masarin, founder of Ghia

For founder Mélanie Masarin, it’s a small, sentimental feature that has her heart. “I went to a sale that Colin King (who obviously has amazing taste) was hosting the very first week that I moved to NY, which also happened to be the week of my birthday,” she explains. “I took my best friends who had also just moved into their new place, and they ended up buying a lot of furniture… and a little wall vase for me as a birthday gift. I have been loving the ritual of putting a fresh flower in it every week even if it’s just a tulip from the grocery store.” An object that’s tied to a memory – no matter how small – can ground you in your space, and fresh flowers are perfect for forging rituals that refresh your mood.

Courtney Adamo, author and content creator

It’s special, nostalgic items that bring Courtney Adamo comfort, too. “On my little dresser, I have a vintage bowl that I found at the thrift store that reminds me of my grandmother – I keep my necklaces draped over the sides. I also have my earrings in a little ceramic bowl that one of my kids made me. And next to both of these things I have two photos of my children in thin brass frames that I bought in the UK. This entire little corner of my bedroom brings me so much joy.” Even if it isn’t an ultra-chic purchase, something handmade by a loved one will always mean the most, and something as simple as framed photographs bring warmth and intimacy to a room.

Lana Wilman, Managing Director at Aphrodite Agency

If your bedroom walls are looking a little bare, this is your sign to start looking for pieces that speak to you. Lana Wilman simply says, “I love my artwork!”, and we can see why. Hanging pride-of-place above her bed, she has a dreamy, gestural painting by London-based artist Emmie Louise, which she has built the tone of her room around. Finding a piece that resonates with you and reflects your taste is a beautiful way to inject personality into your space, or, if you want to go all-out on color and style – a gallery wall is the perfect way to introduce color and character.

Olive Cooke, Founder and Creative Director of Cooke Swim

As a new mom, the bed is the heart of Olive Cooke’s family home. Since welcoming her daughter, she’s found herself spending more time in the bedroom than she ever expected, and the built-in bed frame with its clever cabinetry has become the room’s defining feature. “The whole room is focused on the bed,” she explains. “It’s calm, functional, and beautiful – exactly what we needed in this season of life.” Form and function don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Making the spaces you naturally gravitate to in the bedroom more practical is as simple as investing in furniture that blends storage with style.

Mariko Kuo, Lawyer and Content Creator

It’s the bed itself that Mariko Kuo is drawn to as well. “It’s a simple, mid-century modern wooden King,” she explains. For her, it goes beyond the aesthetics of the piece – it’s what it represents and the role it plays in her family’s daily life. “We deliberately chose a King over a Super King because I love being close to my partner when we sleep. In a way, it feels like a symbol of our love and closeness.” Everything from the look, structure, and size of the bed (and of course, the bed sheets) that make a bedroom your very own sanctuary.
