Mat vs. Reformer Pilates: Which One is Best for You?
You might be surprised by this one.
Some rave about the reformer. Some are devoted to the mat. But one thing is clear: we are – if social media is anything to go by – deep into our collective Pilates era.
And with more class styles popping up than ever before (hello, hot Pilates), it can be hard to decide which type of class is best for you, especially if you’re just getting started.
So to help us live our best Pilates lives, we spoke to Simon Ngo, Pilates expert at Flow Athletic and a 2023 finalist for Australia’s Pilates Professional of the Year, and Lauren Grantley-Blake, co-founder of Rebound Reformer Pilates and certified instructor of over 10 years, to find out how to choose between the machine and the mat.
From understanding the goals to getting started the right way, read on for everything you need to know about mat vs. reformer Pilates.
“For reformer Pilates, it is a good idea to have a proper induction or intro to the machine, either through an intro class (if on offer) or an orientation from the studio. For mat Pilates, generally, it’s less intimidating but has more ‘room for error’. However, it is a good idea to find out the class style and delivery, as hot Pilates and more athletic, dynamic forms are trending at the moment.”
And if you’re new-new? Be patient and give yourself time to find your groove.
“It takes about five sessions to feel familiar, confident, and competent sometimes. So be patient and just enjoy the journey,” she adds.
Ultimately, there is no “right” way when it comes to Pilates, just whatever feels best for you.
“There is no ‘better’ option, just what feels right for you. And in most cases, the best results come from experiencing both, as they complement each other well,” Lauren says.
