Whether you’re having guests over on Christmas day or spending the next few weeks at home on holidays, flowers are a beautiful way to spruce up your space.

However, constantly purchasing flowers can be costly, so making them last as long as possible is extremely helpful – especially if you’ve got people visiting your place during the holiday period.

Here’s a super simple way to prolong the life of your bunches of flowers. Make sure to follow the instructions – a little goes a long way with the ingredients involved.

Florists often rely on a water solution made up of sugar to feed the flowers, some sort of acid to maintain the pH levels of the water, and a bit of bleach to reduce the bacteria and fungi in the vase water.

You can replicate this method at home for your own bunches of flowers, making them last up to a month!

In the instructions below, we've included a few extra steps that you can take to get the most out of your flowers.

Follow these steps to ensure you get the most out of your flowers:

Start with a clean vase (glass or ceramic).
Put 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar or white vinegar into the vase.
Put 1 tbsp sugar (raw is preferred) into the vase.
Fill up the vase with enough water to cover a few inches of the stems.
Mix vinegar, sugar, and water in vase until sugar granules are dissolved.
Trim 2 inches off of flower stems on a diagonal and place into vase.
Change water solution every three days.
Clean the vase every time you change water and trim 2 more inches off of the stems at a diagonal when you do this too.
Make sure no leaves or petals fall into the vase - if they do, simply remove them and change the water solution again. Leaving petal and leaves in the vase water causes your bunch of flowers to wilt faster.
