11 Unmissable TV Shows To Stream This September
With Robin Wright starring in the new psychological drama 'The Girlfriend', A-listers Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon anchoring season four of 'The Morning Show', Jason Bateman playing a debt-ridden brother in 'Black Rabbit', and the cast back for 'Only Murders in the Building' – September marks the triumphant return of TV royalty.
Filling the Marty Byrde-shaped void left after the series finale of Ozark three years ago has proven an impossible pursuit – at least until now. Yep, Jason Bateman is back on our screens (yet still very much in financial trouble) thanks to Netflix’s new series Black Rabbit, and that’s only scratching the surface of September’s offerings. For family drama fans there’s The Girlfriend, an adaptation of Michelle Frances’s 2017 novel starring Robin Wright, and for Peaky Blinder buffs, the new historical period drama, House of Guinness.
Only Murders in the Building, Slow Horses, and The Morning Show are set to return, while the documentary crew behind The Office set their lenses on a new subject in The Paper. Round that out with the new crime thriller Task by the Mare of Easttown creator and a cult-led camp for troubled teens in Wayward and you’re set for streaming success this September.
1. The Morning Show: Season 4
Where Can I Watch It? On Apple TV+
When it premiered in 2019, viewers were surprised to see the loveable Steve Carell take on the role of a longtime news anchor who's fired following allegations of sexual misconduct. From there, The Morning Show has explored power struggles and shifting industry dynamics as co-host Alex Levy (Jennifer Anniston) fights to maintain her position amid public scrutiny. Add ambitious reporter Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) who's thrust into the spotlight as Alex’s new on-air partner, and we have a gripping look at the messy pursuit of truth in the media spotlight.
While Steve Carrell left the show before season three, the fourth instalment has some high-profile new cast members joining, including Marion Cotillard as Celine Dumont, a savvy operator from a storied European family, and Jeremy Irons as Alex’s father.
2. Black Rabbit
Where Can I Watch It? On Netflix
Since Ozark’s end in 2022, Jason Bateman has been waiting for the right script to find him, and here it is. Say goodbye to Marty Byrde and hello to Vince Friedken, the debt-ridden, troubled brother of Jake Friedken (played by Jude Law), and Bateman’s new TV persona. Seriously, can someone get this man a financial advisor? Over eight crime-thrilling episodes, the series follows the brothers, who own New York hotspot Black Rabbit, and the lengths they must go to not only to protect the family business, but also their lives.
3. The Girlfriend
Where Can I Watch It? On Prime Video
Speaking of returning TV royalty, Robin Wright takes center stage in psychological drama The Girlfriend, an adaptation of Michelle Frances’s 2017 novel of the same name. In this twisted six-ep series, Wright stars as Laura, mother to her only son, Daniel. Everything in her life is perfect – great career, house, and husband – until Daniel brings his new girlfriend, Cherry, home to meet the fam. Not only does mum think she’s not good enough for her Danny, she’s also convinced Cherry’s an imposter. It’s a tale as old as time, but are Laura’s suspicions about her son’s new +1 justified? Only one way to find out.
4. House of Guinness
Where Can I Watch It? On Netflix
From the brilliant mind of Peaky Blinders and A Thousand Blows creator Steven Knight comes this new period drama series set to satiate your thirst (in more ways than one!) Set in 1860s New York and Dublin, House of Guinness explores the Roy-family-style tussle for power between Sir Benjamin Guinness’ children after his death as they sought to become the Guinness dynasty’s successor. Dark in ale and tale, this eight-episode historical drama is filled to the pint with a stellar cast that includes Anthony Boyle, Louis Partridge, Emily Fairn, and Fionn O’Shea.
5. The Lowdown
Where Can I Watch It? On Hulu
The latest project from Reservation Dogs creator Sterlin Harjo, The Lowdown follows journalist and rare bookstore resident Lee Raybon (played by Ethan Hawke) who will stop at nothing to uncover the truth. His incessant sleuthing invites him into Tulsa’s seedy underbelly, causing concern from his ex-wife Samantha and his daughter Francis. But nothing could prepare any of them for the storm that breaks after Lee’s latest exposé is published, implicating the Oklahoma illuminati in a possible murder cover-up. Juicy.
6. Only Murders in the Building Season 5
Where Can I Watch It? On Hulu
Our favourite trio of armchair detectives turned actual crime solvers are back for another season, and somehow there are still murders in the building. Season four’s cliffhanger left all of us in as much of a spin as Charles, Oliver, and Mabel upon their discovery, setting up the plot for season five. Once again set in the Arconia, one of New York’s most luxurious – and as it turns out – deadliest apartment buildings, this ten-ep thriller features plenty of famous faces, including new recruits Logan Lerman and Renée Zellweger alongside Gomez, Short, and Martin.
7. The Paper
Where Can I Watch It? On Peacock
One of the most memeable series of all time is getting the spin-off treatment, mockumentary-style. Created by The Office’s Greg Daniels and Nathan for You’s Michael Koman, this 10-episode comedy series follows the same doco crew that made Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch a household name. Now they’ve got their cameras pointed at a new subject – the failing Toledo Truth Teller newspaper. Starring Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, and The Office’s own Oscar Núñez, prepare for many an awkward lol.
8. The Savant
Where Can I Watch It? On Apple TV+
Jessica Chastain both stars and executive produces this eight-ep thriller series centered around an undercover investigator who goes incognito into online hate groups with the aim of preventing domestic terrorism. Intriguingly, The Savant is actually based on a true story and adapted from Andrea Stanley’s 2019 Cosmopolitan article, “Is It Possible to Stop a Mass Shooting Before It Happens?” As for the answer, you’ll just have to watch and see.
9. Slow Horses Season 5
Where Can I Watch It? Apple TV+
In an era of one-show wonders and cutthroat cancellations, it’s rare to see a series reach its fifth season, adding to the many reasons why Slow Horses is so unique. Dubbed “undoubtedly the best spy series on television”, the darkly comedic espionage drama sees suspicions raised over Roddy Ho’s glam new gf this season, with a slew of strange occurrences across the city adding to Lamb and his Slough House spies’ workload. As always, Gary Oldman shines as dysfunctional MI5 agent Jackson Lamb, accompanied once again by Kristin Scott Thomas, Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves and more.
10. Task
Where Can I Watch It? Max
If you loved Mare of Easttown, dust off your Pennsylvania accent impressions and prepare for your pulse rate to soar. Created by Easttown’s Brad Ingelsby, Task is a seven-part crime series starring Mark Ruffalo as a tragedy-struck FBI agent hell-bent on hunting down a group of masked thieves terrorising the streets he’s paid to keep safe. On the surface it’s a classic cops vs robbers tale, but underneath it’s a heart-wrenching story of loss, destruction, and ultimately, revelation.
11. Wayward
Where Can I Watch It? Netflix
Set to awaken the rebellious teen inside us all, this eight-episode series delves deep into the “troubled teen industry” Paris Hilton has so passionately campaigned against the past few years. Starring Toni Collette as youth counselor Leanne, Wayward follows Abby and Leila, two teens who are sent to a correctional school called Tall Pines in rural Oregon. Things go from bad to worse when it’s discovered the school’s run by an unregulated cult, leading a local detective to work with the troubled teens to bring it down from the inside.
