What is mango wood?
While it’s better known for the sweet tropical fruit it provides, the mango tree is also responsible for providing one of the world’s most versatile woods. A defining characteristic of mango wood is its dense grains, which make it incredibly strong, putting it in the “hardwood” category.
Due to the density of mango wood, it is often used as a material to make furniture, floorboards, and other weight bearing household items. It’s also extremely durable, so any item made from mango wood is guaranteed to last for years to come.
What are the benefits of mango wood?
Mango wood is one of the world’s most sustainable woods for a multitude of reasons. Firstly, the mango tree grows at a rapid pace, unlike other wood-cultivating counterparts. This means that after the tree has finished producing fruit, it is then ready to be harvested and turned into wood for material production.
Unlike other woods often used for furniture, mango wood takes only seven to fifteen years to grow, making it a reliable source of lumber for furniture reproduction. Once it’s harvested, mango wood does not require extensive processing, which cuts out a significant amount of water and chemicals which would otherwise be used on different cuts of wood – meaning once the wood is harvested, it is ready to be used for commercial purposes as soon as it’s cut from the ground.
Mango wood is also similar in appearance and texture to the popular material: teak, however, mango trees are not nearing endangerment and extinction like many other trees used for furniture and material production as the growth of mango trees is rapid and can be relied upon all year round.
How to care for mango wood furniture
Like most furniture pieces made from natural materials, mango wood is to be kept out of direct sunlight to avoid fading and discolouration. To clean your mango wood furniture, wipe the surface with a damp cloth (not paper towel), avoid using liquid cleaners and mild detergent as this will dry out the wood and also lead to discolouration.
