The Best Places to Find Vintage Furniture In (And Around) Sydney
Everything old is new again.
That popular phrase might be said too often, but it seems to have even more resonance in 2019. Whether it's due to current environmental concerns around sustainability, or stems from our nostalgia for simpler times, our appetite for vintage goods has never been larger. (Does anyone else trawl Facebook marketplace here?! Thought so.)
This is certainly true when it comes to styling our homes with beautiful antique pieces. From teak sideboards and statement armchairs to gilded mirrors and standing lamps, we've pinned it all.
While it might be easier to visit your local shopping centre and pick out a new table from a chain store, there's a certain feeling of accomplishment that comes from rummaging through an antique market and stumbling across the one.
Here, we're recommending our favourite spots to do just that. These are the best places in (and around) Sydney to shop for vintage furniture. Happy hunting.
Victory Theatre Antique Centre
19-21 Govetts Leap Rd, Blackheath NSW 2785
Located in Blackheath in the Blue Mountains, Victory Theatre Antique Centre is well worth the drive west from Sydney. Fifty antique dealers are housed within a historic Art Deco building, selling all kinds of wares from jewellery to clothing and books. Furniture is just one part of the fun, but prepare to nab yourself a velvet armchair or rattan coffee table among the treasures.
Mitchell Road Antique & Design Centre
17 Bourke Rd, Alexandria NSW 2015
Walking into the warehouse that is Mitchell Road Antiques is like walking into a vintage lover's heaven—a maze-like heaven at that. Prepare to get lost among the many aisles and stalls. Here you'll find genuine Parker sideboards, vinyl dining chairs and Mid Century nesting tables, at surprisingly affordable prices.
13-15 Banyette St, Bowral NSW 2576
Dirty Janes is the largest indoor market in the Southern Highlands, comprising 1600 square metres of vintage, antique and upcycled goods. With over 75 stallholders, there's a wide variety of furniture on display. Stick around for a scone and English Breakfast in the adjoining tea room—it's rumoured to be delicious.
2 Kent Rd, Mascot NSW 2020
Retro lovers will appreciate Lunatiques. With new stock arriving daily, there is a huge selection of Mid Century and Art Deco furniture up for grabs. It also offers custom orders, so if you've been hunting for the perfect bookshelf or table to no avail, try their bespoke service.
247 Australia St, Newtown NSW 2042
While this space may not be as large as some of the warehouses above, it sure packs a lot in. Expect to see a teak bar cart, rocking chair or even some statement pendant lights.
Yep, you read that right. In recent years (or even just months), Facebook groups have grown to be one of the best sources for finding vintage furniture in Australia. Try Sydney Retro Recycle for unique pieces, or find your local "buy, swap, sell" group to see what your neighbours are selling.
Op Shops
Charity stores hide some absolute gems—it's just a matter of visiting the right ones. While your local store might leave you wanting, travel further afield and the Vinnies or Salvos could be hiding your dream dining table. Salvos Minchinbury and Vinnies Waverley are both renowned for their furniture selection.
