When it comes to golden sandy shores and crystal clear swimming spots, Australia takes the cake for the most breathtaking and diverse options. Okay, we may be slightly biased, but the following list of lesser-known beaches that showcase our country's incredible natural beauty proves our point perfectly.

This summer, forget tourist-filled Bondi or Manly and head off the beaten track to discover a quiet place to splash around where you won't have to fight for a car space.

Whether you're looking to snorkel or you simply want to relax on the sand, we've rounded up 32 of the most picturesque and peaceful beaches in Australia to visit on your next holiday down under.

New South Wales

1. Garrie Beach

You'll find Garie Beach on the outskirts of southern Sydney in the lower Royal National Park. It's a great spot for a picnic with friends or even to spot a whale if you're lucky.

2. Mungo Beach

Mungo Beach and the surrounding area is perfect for those looking to set up camp near the ocean. With tall sand dunes and heaps of smaller coves to explore, this North Coast spot might not stay secret for long.

3. Milk Beach

7. Washaway Beach

Within the Lime Bay State Reserve, this beach is worth making an effort to find. With nothing but towering bushland as far as the eye can see, you'll feel like you've stumbled on an undiscovered gem here.

Victoria

18. Squeaky Beach

Named after its fine white sandy shores that squeak while you walk, this secret beach showcases impressive rock formations that create small coves that are just waiting to be explored.

19. Thirteenth Beach

West of Barwon Heads, Thirteenth Beach is a 4.5km stretch of coastline that is ideal for surfers, swimmers and sunbathers alike. If you're up for it, stop in at the nearby golf course for a few holes.

20. Killarney Beach

Dramatic rock formations and burnt red cliffs are one of the reasons Point Ann is becoming more popular each year. The other reason is the beautiful ocean where whales are known to frolic.

26. Cape Leveque

Only accessible by four-wheel drive, this absolutely stunning stretch of coast is one for the bucket list. Burnt orange dunes and turquoise waters mix to put on a magical natural show.

27. Turtle Bay

Dirk Hartog Island is the most western point in the country and has become a national wildlife sanctuary including—you guessed it—loggerhead turtles. It's worth the trip over to the island to spot dugongs, whales and other sea creatures that roam the shores at Turtle Bay.

In Arnhem Land at the top of the Northern Territory of Australia lies the Gove Peninsula with some of the clearest swimming spots in the country. Completely untouched, this secret gem is sure to rejuvenate your body and soul.

30. Cobourg Peninsula

Traditional owners of the land of the Cobourg Peninsula only allow fifteen vehicles in at any given time, so you're sure to experience the wild beauty of this region without a crowd. There are many rock pools and coral reefs that are visible at low tide where you might spot a turtle, stingray and exotic fish.

South Australia

31. Rapid Bay Beach

Located on the Fleurieu Peninsula, 100 kilometres south of the state capital, this tiny beach haven is nestled between dramatic cliffs. The crystal blue waters are brimming with tropical fish and marine life – if you love diving, you'll be pleased to hear this is one of the best locations to spot leafy sea dragons!

32. Taylors Beach, Lincoln National Park

Taylors Beach in Lincoln National Park can only be accessed by foot and that's how you know it's not going to be crowded with people! From the Taylors Landing Campground, walk 15 minutes along the Investigator walking trail to get to this rugged beauty that's a lesser-known spot for beach goers.
