16 New TV Shows We Can't Wait to Watch in April

So you’ve binged your way through March’s new television offerings – what will be on your list for April? It's proving to be another huge month for the small screen with everything from an addictive British spy series to binge-worthy reality television, and star-studded true stories a-plenty.

Here are some of the most binge-worthy new series to get stuck into this month.

16 New TV Shows We Can't Wait to Watch in April

1. The Girl From Plainville

A late-breaking entrant from March, but we just have to include it here because it looks so good. Elle Fanning stars in this chilling true series, based on a real case from a few years ago. Liz Hannah and Patrick McManus, who created the addictive Stan series Dr Death, are the showrunners and worked on the scripts, with a stacked supporting cast that includes Chloe Sevigny and Aya Cash, of The Boys fame. Between this and The Great, Elle Fanning is really emerging as a small screen queen, and we love it.

2. Luxe Listings Sydney season 2

The real estate wars continue in Luxe Listings Sydney, back for a second season with bigger houses, bigger budgets and even more realtors vying for centre stage. Joining Gavin Rubinstein, D’leanne Lewis and Simon Cohen this season is Monika Tu, and all four of them are now in contention to secure the most epic deals as the property bubble in Sydney’s glossy eastern suburbs shows no sign of bursting. You know you loved it last season, will you be back for more in season two?

3. Slow Horses

Based on a beloved spy series by Mick Herron comes Slow Horses – an espionage caper about a group of agents who messed up so badly they’ve been exiled to Slough House, a wing of MI6 so dormant they can’t cause any trouble there. (Think James Bond… in retirement.) But when a case falls into their lap that only they can solve, the Slow Horses of Slough House are given the opportunity to redeem themselves in the eyes of special forces. The cast for this is like a who’s who of British stage and screen: Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Jack Lowden, Olivia Cooke, Sophie Okonedo, Jonathan Pryce and many, many more. One for fans of Spooks and State of Play.

4. Anatomy of a Scandal

Sienna Miller and Michelle Dockery co-starring in a television series from the creators of Big Little Lies and The Undoing? Where can we sign up? The pedigree for this series – which also stars Naomi Scott and Rupert Friend – couldn’t be better; it’s also based on a beloved thriller set in the world of British politics, where an MP is charged with assaulting his young aide and the ensuing trial reveals the truth about his picture perfect marriage to wife Sophie (Miller). This six episode series promises to be proper binge-worthy television.

5. Roar

Nicole Kidman. Cynthia Erivo. Issa Rae. Alison Brie. Betty Gilpin. Meritt Wever. These are just six of the women starring in this comedic anthology series from the creators of the sadly cancelled Netflix wrestling series Glow. This new show promises to offer a tongue-in-cheek portrait of modern womanhood across eight hilarious and thought-provoking episodes.

6. The First Lady

And there’s yet another anthology series coming to streaming in April, this time looking at the lives of various First Ladies, including one Michelle Obama. The First Lady is a seriously star-studded show: Viola Davis plays Michelle Obama, Gillian Anderson plays Eleanor Roosevelt, and Michelle Pfeiffer plays Betty Ford, with a coterie of young stars including Aussie actor Eliza Scanlen, joining them as their younger selves. The First Lady looks epic, and

7. The Flight Attendant season 2

Kaley Cuoco’s Cassie Bowden is back for round two, as The Flight Attendant returns for another season of boisterous, outrageous, a little bit unhinged television. The first season ended with an absolutely wild season finale, in which a co-worker was revealed to be a CIA plant, a former one-night-stand to be a ruthless assassin and…Cassie was cleared of any wrongdoing in the murder of her very sexy fling Alex Solokov (Michel Huisman). How much trouble can she get up to in season two, you ask? We’re sure all kinds of trouble, especially now that Sharon Stone is confirmed to be appearing in a guest role. Perfect casting.

8. A Very British Scandal

This Claire Foy and Paul Bettany miniseries first debuted in the UK over Christmas, and it’s finally being released in Australia on Prime Video at the end of the month. The series takes a deep look at one of the most scandalous events in British high society: The vicious divorce case of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll in ‘60s England, in which one piece of evidence was an image of the Duchess performing oral sex on a man not her husband. In the 1960s, people! For any fans of The Crown, Claire Foy is her usual brilliant self, bringing shades of nuance and complexity to the woman many believe was the victim of the first media slut-shaming. This series might be set in the ‘60s, but it’s still very relevant for audiences today.

9. Barons

There’s nothing like a good Aussie drama, is there? This ABC series looks like it will be one of the best, with a cast of exciting young stars including Sean Keenan, Jillian Nguyen, Sophia Forrest and Hunter Page Lochard, and set in the world of ‘70s surf culture, when competing labels were vying for their slice of the surfwear big business pie. We expect this show will have big Puberty Blues energy – another Sean Keenan vehicle! – and we are so excited to watch it.

10. Gaslit

Think you know everything about the Watergate scandal? This Stan series would like to prove you wrong. Taking Martha Mitchell – wife to Richard Nixon’s Attorney General John Mitchell (Sean Penn) – as its focus, this series will look at the role she played in bringing Richard Nixon down. Played by Julia Roberts in a fantastic performance, Gaslit aims to show the truth behind some of the biggest, most recognisable headlines in recent political history and it’s really juicy, watchable television, too.

11. Barry Season Three

The beloved Bill Hader comedy Barry is returning for its long-awaited third season at the end of April. Those who love the show know that the series focuses on Barry, an assassin who is trying to quit the business to become an actor instead, though fortune is not always in his favour. Think offbeat, quirky Killing Eve energy, with a supporting cast including Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg and The Good Place’s D’arcy Carden.

12. The Man Who Fell To Earth

Once upon a time, The Man Who Fell To Earth was best known as an iconic David Bowie film, but this new series hopes to surpass that first adaptation, courtesy of a brilliant case including Bill Nighy, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Naomie Harris. Ejiofor and Harris will headline as quite literally star-crossed lovers – Ejiofor is the titular man who fell to earth, and Harris the scientist he falls in love with – whose union might be enough to save both our world and an alien one.

13. We Own This City

A gripping and well made crime drama starring Jon Bernthal – and when is he ever bad, honestly? – based on the true story of a disgraced unit in the Baltimore Police Department who carried out several robberies and crimes while masquerading as good cops. Wunmi Mosaku, one of our favourite new actors after breaking out in Loki and Lovecraft Country, will also star in this, alongside The Good Wife’s Josh Charles and Succession’s Dagmara Dominczyk. Six episodes of just truly thrilling television.

14. The Offer

The Godfather is one of the most respected and idolised films of all time. But what was really going on behind the scenes while making the movie? The Offer will delve deep into the archives to share the chaotic reality of bringing The Godfather to the screen, including clashes between producers and director Francis Ford Coppola and more. The cast includes Miles Teller as producer Albert S Ruddy, Matthew Goode as Robert Evans, Juno Temple as Bettye McCartt and Dan Fogler as Francis Ford Coppola. This one is a must see for every cinephile and film fan.

15. Shining Girls

We’ll watch anything Elisabeth Moss is in. Especially if it’s a crime thriller in which Moss plays a young woman who teams with a journalist who investigates her own assault. The cast for this show is so good: Wagner Moura of Narcos fame stars alongside Jamie Bell – Billy Elliot himself! – and Philippa Soo, or the original Eliza from Hamilton. It’s definitely going to be a dark and twisted watch, but nobody is more compelling in that genre than The Handmaid’s Tale and Invisible Man star Moss.

16. Ozark Season Four, Part 2

This is it. For real. The very last episodes of the final season of Ozark. The fourth season was split into two halves, with the first premiering in January, and the very end of April will bring about the series finale. Will fans of the show get the sendoff they were clamouring for? You’ll have to watch on to find out.
