'Sex/Life' and 10 Other Shows We're Streaming in July

It’s all teen shows, all the time in July, with a handful of major youth-centric series either debuting or returning this month. There’s the steamy new drama Sex/Life that has everyone talking, as well as more episodes of Netflix’s coming-of-age show Never Have I Ever and Outer Banks. But the most important teen show returning in July is Gossip Girl, the splashy HBO Max reboot of everyone’s beloved naughty noughties series, streaming on Binge.

What antics will this new generation of Upper East Side rich kids get up to this time around? Tune into Gossip Girl from mid July to find out. But if that’s not your thing, there are many more shows to watch this month. Here are our favourites.

11 Shows to Stream in July

1. Starstruck

New Zealand comedian Rose Matafeo is the creator, writer and star of this romantic comedy series, which is a co-production between BBC and HBO Max. Think of her as an inheritor to Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag crown: this series is funny, fresh and completely frank about what it’s like to date, have sex and try to make it when you’re in your 20s living far from home in London. But there’s an added layer to this six episode series: Rose’s character Jessie is a nanny and works at a cinema but Tom, the man she has a one night stand with in the first episode, just happens to be a super famous action movie star. It’s a gender-flipped Notting Hill, and it’s the most charming thing on television right now. We binged it in one go.

2. Young Royals

The clue is right there in the title: Young Royals is a show about the fictional Swedish Prince Wilhelm, who is shipped off to boarding school where he learns a lot about himself, and how he wants to live his life. It’s being billed as juicy and addictive, for fans of Red White and Royal Blue, coincidentally one of our favourite romance novels. We think this one is going to be huge.

3. Gossip Girl

Hey Upper East Siders. Guess who’s back? Gossip Girl makes a triumphant return to our screen this month, with a brand new cast and an exciting and fresh set of rich kid antics to get invested in. The best news about this reboot, though, is that the original writer Josh Safran is returning. He was the one who drove those mindblowing storylines from the original series – Serena thinking she had murdered someone! Chuck and Blair in the limousine! Nate and the Duchess! – so his return promises that the plot of this reboot will be equally as ridiculous and fizzy. Prepare to get obsessed.

4. Luxe Listings Sydney

If you loved Selling Sunset and dreamed of there one day being an Australian equivalent, well, here it is. Luxe Listings Sydney is a glitzy, glamorous and gloriously bitchy reality series set in Sydney’s cutthroat real estate world. Like Selling Sunset, the secret sauce here are the characters, including two realtors jostling for top dog position, and a buyer’s agent out for his clients – and himself. It’s a wild ride.

5. Virgin River Season 3

The people who love Virgin River, now in its third season, really love it. It’s something to do with comfort television, we think, and the fact that despite tackling serious subjects, this show is really easy to watch. Plus, we’re completely invested in the characters, especially the love story between Mel, a nurse who moves to the small town of Virgin River for a fresh start, and Jack, who she meets while there.

6. Sex/Life

Billie has it all: a gorgeous husband, a sprawling Connecticut mansion and two beautiful children. The only problem is that her gorgeous husband won’t sleep with her, and Billie’s sexual frustration is taking over her life. This very (very) raunchy Netflix series is based on a bestselling and anonymous memoir about a woman in the exact same position. The first episode alone has a sheer amount of sex scenes and has prompted a huge conversation particularly in regards to quite a visual scene in episode three. Just be prepared. That’s all we’ll say…

7. Never Have I Ever Season 2

This is hands down one of the best coming-of-age series ever made, and we’re so excited that it’s back for a second season. If you haven’t watched it yet, you can binge the first season on Netflix now in anticipation, ready to fall back in love with Devi, an anxious and adorable high schooler who just wants to get a boyfriend, get through school, and get through her family’s grief over the death of her father. Created by Mindy Kaling, this series is so funny and so relatable. It will take you back to your teen years in a second.

8. Dr Death

Stan’s big release this month is Dr Death, starring Joshua Jackson, Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater. It’s based on a popular podcast and is a fictional retelling of a true crime that rocked Dallas, when patients going in for routine surgery at a hospital under the watchful gaze of a new doctor end up dead. True crime fans will be obsessed with this series.

9. Ted Lasso Season 2

Did you watch the first season of Ted Lasso last year? The Jason Sudeikis-starring comedy was one of the most popular shows of the year, winning rave reviews and sweeping awards season, with wins for stars Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham. It’s a lovely little show – and very easy to binge the first season, with all of the 30 minute episodes available now – about an NFL coach who somehow ends up managing a major English football team. Will his unorthodox coaching methods win over the brooding Brits? Watch and find out.

10. The Pursuit of Love

We love a good period drama here at Bed Threads, and this one is for fans of Bridgerton and Sanditon – basically anyone who love their period dramas with a side of sex. Based on Nancy Mitford’s post-war novel, it stars Lily James, Andrew Scott and Emily Beecham as a trio of bright young things looking to party, have sex and figure out the point of life in London and Paris during WW2. It’s gorgeous to look at, very funny and at three episodes is the perfect thing to enjoy one Sunday afternoon. Heaven.

11. Outer Banks Season 2

Twisty and turny murder mystery meets classic adolescent melodrama in this Netflix series, back for a second season at the end of July. What will happen to this close knit beachside community, after a group of teenagers discover a body in an abandoned boat – along with millions and millions of dollars in cash? Tune into the second season to find out.
