Is Diet Coke Actually Better For You?

It’s low in sugar and calories, but does that automatically make it the healthier choice?

Whether it’s your mid-afternoon pick-me-up or the thing you swear you’ll cut back on every Monday, Diet Coke has become something of a daily ritual for many of us (as well as the focus of public investigation due to its upsettingly declining presence in pubs, restaurants, and takeaway franchises).

And while it’s often positioned as the “better” alternative to regular soft drink – lower in sugar, lower in calories – there’s always been a lingering question: is it actually better for you, or just better on paper?

We tried to get a clearer picture on where Diet Coke really sits when it comes to your health.

Does Diet Coke Affect Your Body Differently?

While it doesn’t spike blood sugar in the same way as regular soft drinks, Diet Coke can still have an impact on the body, particularly when consumed frequently. For one, it retains that intensely sweet flavor profile, which can reinforce a preference for sweetness overall.

If you’ve ever swapped your regular Coke for a Diet Coke and quietly congratulated yourself on making a “healthier” choice, there is some research to support the move. Contrary to concerns above, a short-term 2022 review of 12 clinical trials found that replacing full-sugar soft drinks with low- or no-calorie alternatives could lead to modest weight loss – around one kilogram on average – particularly in adults living with overweight or obesity, and those at risk of Type 2 diabetes. The catch? It only really works if those saved calories aren’t simply sneaking back in elsewhere.

So, is Diet Coke Actually “Better” For You?

In a direct comparison with regular soft drink, yes – primarily because it removes the added sugar and calories. But (and we cannot stress this enough), that doesn’t make it a health drink. It sits somewhere in the middle: not inherently harmful when consumed in moderation, but not something that necessarily adds nutritional value either.

Diet Coke isn’t the villain it’s sometimes made out to be, but it’s also not quite the wellness win it can appear to be. If you enjoy it, there’s no need to panic. But if it’s become a daily essential, it might be worth asking why (and whether there’s room for a little more variety).
