Where To Eat, Stay, and Explore in Marfa, Texas

Discover the desert town full of art, architecture, and adventure.

At the end of last year, I took a four-day trip with some friends to Marfa, Texas – a remote art outpost nestled in the high desert. Getting there requires some effort (a four-hour drive from El Paso or five-hours from San Antonio), but the journey was well worth it. The town is entirely walkable and welcoming, with friendly locals, a thriving art scene, and sweeping desert landscapes the stretch endlessly in every direction.

Pack your suncream, breeziest linen loungewear set and film camera for a summer road trip – here's where to stay, eat and experience in Texas' quirkiest art town.

See: Prada Marfa

One of Marfa's most iconic landmarks is Prada Marfa – a permanent art installation located just outside town in Valentine, along Route 90. Completed in 2005, the structure has remained unchanged ever since. Despite its remote location, you'll almost always find someone there, drawn by its surreal presence in the desert. Sunset is the ideal time to visit for the most striking photos.

See: JUDD Foundation

The Judd Foundation offers a rare chance to experience iconic American artist Donald Judd's world firsthand. On a guided tour, you can explore multiple spaces at once, including his former home and studio at La Mansana de Chinati. The buildings house an incredible collection of Judd's work, alongside pieces by his renowned contemporaries – an unforgettable immersion into minimalist art and architecture.

Do: Big Bend National Park

Big Bend National Park is a dream for those who love the open road. Located along the US-Mexico border, following the curves of the Rio Grande, the park offers dramatic desert landscapes and sweeping views at every turn. It's a four-hour round trip from Marfa and next time, I'd dedicate a full day to take it all in – leaving early to catch the changing light across the terrain.

Shop: Stop & Read Books

Stop & Read Books is a charming local bookstore right on Marfa's main street. It's more than just books – you'll find thoughtfully curated wine, homewares and unique gifts. Don't forget to say hi to Pepper the resident shop dog while you browse.

Eat: Margarets

Margaret's is hands down the best restaurant in Marfa. With chic interiors and a consistently full house, it delivers impeccable food and beautifully curated menu – well worth planning into your itinerary.

Stay: The Hotel Paisano

Hotel Paisano, opened in 1930, is a Marfa landmark known for its Spanish revival architecture and Hollywood history. It served as a headquarters for the cast and crew of 'Giant' Starring James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson. A small lobby museum showcases memorabilia from the film, and its central location makes it an easy home base for exploring town.
