‘Old Money Aesthetic' Is Trending on TikTok, Here's How to Get the Look in Your Home

Over the last year, Gen Z and millennials have revived the “old money” aesthetic that is all about embracing preppy fashion and romanticising the upper class lifestyle. The 'old money aesthetic' is showing up in fashion, decor, and leisure activities, with the hashtag #oldmoneyaesthetic garnering over 220 million views on TikTok and #oldmoney over 680 million views so far. There was also been an increase in Pinterest searches for the look in the last six months, with a 70% increase reported in February.

So, what exactly is it and how do you achieve this look in your home? The good news is you actually don't need to be rich or come from wealth to inject a little bit of the old money aesthetic into your home. It can be as easy as heading to your local vintage/antique store and picking out some gems.

What exactly is the "old money" aesthetic?

Old money is wealth that that has been inherited rather than earned, and the aesthetic is based around a wealthy-looking, classic style. The trend kicked off on TikTok where Gen Zers began sharing “old money” inspiration. It's a reverse of the 2010s new money trend that celebrates jogging suits, sneakers, and hoodies with oversized, designer logos. The aesthetic brings to mind images of Blair Waldorf, country clubs, chateaus, manicured gardens, fancy dinners, and polo.

Why is it trending?

Throughout the pandemic, we have understandably been seeking things that bring us comfort and are finding ourselves particularly nostalgic for another time. We've seen it in the resurgence of fashion and design that was popular during the YK2 era, and the grandmillenial trend.

The “old money” aesthetic is trending for the same reason, that is, it seems to stem from a desire for simpler times in the past. This aesthetic symbolises a desire to escape and individuals searching for a different time period than the current one we're in.

How to get the look in your home

This style is classic and preppy, and primarily embraces vintage/antique design. It looks expensive, but it's also quite cosy and warm. The easiest and most affordable way to introduce this style into your home is to head to your local secondhand store, search Facebook marketplace or Gumtree.

You can bring the look into your home by adding the following:

  • Ornate wallpaper
  • Upholstered furniture
  • Vintage/antique furniture
  • Gilded mirrors
  • Old books
  • Ornate dinnerware
  • Chandeliers
  • Candlesticks
  • Linen tablecloths and napkins
  • Four-poster beds
  • Dark timber
  • Tea sets
  • Leather trunks
