13 Must-Read Books Everyone Will Be Talking About This Month

Have you been desperately seeking something new to read? Well, the next few months are going to over deliver. There are a huge number of new releases coming down the pipeline that we guarantee you will be worth your time. Sally Rooney! Liane Moriarty! Jodi Picoult! Elizabeth Day! They all have their latest books out in the coming months, along with a whole number of exciting new releases. Here are our picks.

13 Must-Read Books This Month

1. Magpie by Elizabeth Day

You know her as the podcaster behind How To Fail, but Elizabeth Day is also the author of several novels, including the beloved The Party and Paradise City. Her latest book is called Magpie and it’s a thriller with a plot twist right in the middle that we definitely won’t give away, and that Day wrote entirely during lockdown. This is a real page turner.

2. Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney

Sally Rooney’s long-awaited third novel is finally here: the story of two best friends, Alice and Eileen, and the men who are tangled up in their lives. It’s spare and elegant and funny and it’s total Sally Rooney magic for anyone who loved Normal People and Conversations With Friends. Everyone is going to be reading this book this month.

3. Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty

If you love Liane Moriarty’s stories, whether Big Little Lies or Nine Perfect Strangers or What Alice Forgot, you’ll know that they’re always packed with action, stuffed with characters and full of life. Apples Never Fall is no exception, the Australian author’s latest story of a family hiding secrets in plain sight.

4. The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman

We devoured Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club, a hilarious and totally charming murder mystery set in a retirement village, that was released last year and dominated the bestseller charts. This is his follow up and we predict it will be just as beloved, just as witty and just as wonderful.

5. Love and Virtue by Diana Reid

Coming at the end of September is this debut novel by Sydney based writer Diana Reid, which has already won praise from Sorrow and Bliss author Meg Mason and Kokomo’s Victoria Hannan. It’s a Normal People-esque coming of age story set at a university in Sydney, where two best friends find themselves at a crossroads over the events of one fateful night out during O-week.

6. The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles

People love Amor Towles, who is a storyteller of such detail and care behind books including A Gentleman In Moscow. This novel, set to be released in early October, is his latest, and follows three young men in 1950s America and a road trip across the centre of the country that will change their lives forever.

7. Oh William! by Elizabeth Strout

Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Elizabeth Strout loves to revisit her characters over and over again, in different phases of their lives, which is where this novel picks up, after the events of her earlier book My Name Is Lucy Barton. Lucy is now a widow and living in New York, when her first husband from many years ago drifts back into her life. A wonderful book for a spring read, on sale at the end of October.

8. The Younger Wife by Sally Hepworth

Also coming in late October is Sally Hepworth’s latest book: The Younger Wife. This book has everything – family drama, long buried secrets, love, loss and lots and lots of lies. Nobody tells a gripping yarn quite like Sally Hepworth, whose previous books including The Secrets of Midwives are firm favourites of team Bed Threads.

9. Devotion by Hannah Kent

One of Australia’s most beloved writers, Hannah Kent is the author of Burial Rites, The Good People and, now, Devotion. Set in Australia’s colonial era, when a ship sets sail for South Australia from Europe, Devotion follows the blossoming relationship between two young girls aboard.

10. Love Stories by Trent Dalton

The man who made us weep, courtesy of Bow Swallows Universe and All Our Shimmering Skies has a new book out at the end of October, this time a work of non fiction. Love Stories is the result of Dalton, sitting down in a mall in Brisbane, and asking people to tell him a love story. It’s moving and beautiful and full of heart, and just the thing we need to read at the end of the year. A wonderful gift, or something to treasure for yourself.

11. Wish You Were Here by Jodi Picoult

We’re always excited when there’s a brand new Jodi Picoult book to devour, whether it’s My Sister’s Keeper, Nineteen Minutes or Salem Falls. The author is adept at weaving complex ethical dilemmas into sweeping stories, and we always get lost in her words. In November, her latest book Wish You Were Here will be released. The novel is billed as a tale of resilience, when a bright young art appraiser gets stranded on an island, far from home.

12. Go Tell The Bees That I am Gone by Diana Gabaldon

If you haven’t yet cracked into the Outlander book series, what have you been waiting for? Fans of the television show will love the original books, which are epic and romantic and so engrossing to read. Author Diana Gabaldon will be releasing the much anticipated and desperately longed for latest book in the series in November, with the American revolution threatening to separate Jamie and Claire once more.

13. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Taylor Jenkins Reid is the author of the New York Times Bestselling novels Malibu Rising, Daisy Jones and the Six, and now The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. It is the story of a classic movie star, Evelyn Hugo, who decides to tell her life story, recounting the world of showbiz, 1950s Los Angeles, and the truth behind all seven of her husbands.
